Hi Catherine!

I'm going to answer this based on the assumption that you're deciding what college to attend after you've received your acceptance letters.

If you're not looking at only ranking then you've come to the right place!

First, look at the campus atmosphere and location. Do you see yourself miserable in the middle of snowy, rural Urbana-Champaign and would much rather bike to class, surf, or laze around on the beach at Santa Barbara? I understand that in the moment location doesn't matter as much when all your friends are going to their dream schools, but trust me when I say that the atmosphere and location will make all the difference in how you thrive in college.

Second, look at the classes the college offers and how flexible they are with their 'interdisciplinary approach'. Make sure to read the descriptions for each class. What class actually makes you want to start college right away?

Third, and final, look at the opportunities present after you graduate from college. My top two choices were UIUC and NYU, but at the end of the day it came down to NYU due to the immense writing and journalism opportunities the city offers from the get-go. I've always been a city girl too, so I immediately fell in love with the city whereas my suburbia friends struggled.

Even if you didn't get in for your major, or your interests have changed in the time you applied from the time you got accepted, you will always have the flexibility to take the classes you want!

Hey there Catherine,

Something I would suggest is doing research on the faculty of the colleges you're considering. Professors and administrators have really MADE my experience (I graduate in the Spring) and will open doors for you both during your schooling and afterward. Reaching out to a professor before you're even a student would show immense initiative, too, and they love stuff like that.

There are a LOT of things I wish I knew before starting the college app process that my school counsellors never mentioned (it's a lot harder to find information as an international student, unfortunately).

I'd say the most important thing would be to not care about a college's ranking as much (definitely not the most important aspect of a college) and to be open to change. You're most probably not going to end up in your dream college, or the college you most expect. In fact, up until 2 months before heading to NYU I had already accepted my letter to UIUC!

Don't fixate on the Ivy Leagues, apply to colleges that genuinely make you excited, and check out the classes they offer for your areas of interest and read the descriptions!

Hey, Jabez! I'm Nat- one of the moderators for the forum. I'm in a rather unique situation. My college originally closed its doors around March, but that was before the largest wave occurred in my state. We went from having around 20 cases a day, to now having 500 or more. My state is not reclosing, and the university is now planning to open in the fall. I have been disappointed by the reactions of my state and local government, and by my own school. They will try to mandate social distancing and mask wearing, but since my state is historically very stubborn to chance, many people forgo masks altogether. I have an autoimmune disease, and so I am a part of the at risk population for COVID-19. I will not be attending school for approximately a year, if not longer if the pandemic continues. They are pushing online courses to students, but I do not want to pay full tuition to take online courses. The school does have some relief funds and scholarships for students affected by COVID, but they are set on opening doors and having people move in to the campus (I even know people moving in now). It’s a disheartening scene, knowing that people are trying to force life to be normal when my life as an immunocompromised person will be changed for the rest of my life. I am hoping to attend school in 2021, but that is also reliant on when the pandemic ceases.

Hi! I'm Ananya, I just finished my freshman year at SCAD.

We were all encouraged to go into the facebook group for our class and try to find roommates before the school year started. I was usually looking for people with the same interests as me, but personally I wanted my college experience to be different from my high school experience, so I didn't look for people who were EXACTLY the same. A large part of college is experiencing new things, and a large part of the experiences you have are dependent on the people you meet and the friends you make!

My advice is to look for roommates that you can be comfortable with, but that are different enough from you that you can learn something from them and do things you haven't done before.

The roommate that I wanted to go with cancelled last minute, so I did end up with random roommates. I definitely can't speak for everyone, but we didn't have any shared interests so it was hard to bond with them.

I would say if you have the chance to choose a roommate, definitely put yourself out there and try it! If you don't then still try to make the best of it. It shouldn't make or break your experience.

Hi! I'm Ananya, I just finished my freshman year at SCAD.

It honestly varies a lot depending on the roommate. I know that isn't too helpful but there are some basic things that everyone can do to make life easier! I wasn't really friends with my roommates because we had no shared interests but we could still function because we communicated our needs/boundaries/expectations very early on in the quarter. When you're doing this you definitely want to be honest and avoid just saying "yes" to things because you don't know them very well.

Another thing you should do is to always honor those agreements the best you can. If someone else isn't holding up their end, it can be pretty frustrating but remember that you're gonna have to live with them all year unless you apply for a room change. Approach it with patience for as long as possible , and if that doesn't work then bring in an RA.

If you become good friends with your roommate that's amazing and you're super lucky! Just know that you're gonna end up needing space away from them even if you are really good friends. Find places around campus that are comfortable for your alone time, and your relationship with your roommate(s) will be healthier for it.
